Asia set its position as the undisputed leader of global aviation in 2025, with the region accounting for nine of the world's ten busiest international air routes and all five busiest domestic corridors, according to aviation analytics firm OAG.

The Hong Kong-Taipei sector retained its crown as the world’s busiest international route for a second consecutive year, with airlines offering 6.83 million two-way seats—a modest increase from 2024.

Seven carriers serve the route, led by Cathay Pacific Airways commanding a 39% capacity share, followed by EVA Airways at 20.9% and China Airlines at 13.1%, cited the global travel data provider.

Asia-Pacific's dominance extended across the rankings, with seven of the top ten cross-border routes located in the region. The Cairo-Jeddah sector secured second place with 5.7 million seats, highlighting sustained religious and labor traffic between Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

Kuala Lumpur-Singapore climbed to third with 3.2% annual growth, while Seoul Incheon-Tokyo Narita and Seoul Incheon-Osaka Kansai rounded out the top five.

The only non-Asia-Pacific entry in the international top ten was New York JFK-London Heathrow, ranking tenth with 3.97 million seats—a 1% decline from 2024.

Domestic routes: Asia’s unchallenged stronghold

On domestic fronts, Asia's supremacy proved absolute. South Korea's Seoul Gimpo-Jeju sector once again topped global rankings with nearly 14.7 million seats, served by seven carriers operating approximately 97 daily return flights.

Korean Air and Asiana Airlines together controlled 51% of capacity on the 280-mile route. Japan claimed the next two positions: Chitose-Tokyo Haneda with 12.1 million seats and Fukuoka-Tokyo Haneda with 11.5 million. Vietnam's Hanoi-Ho Chi Minh City corridor ranked fourth worldwide with 11.2 million seats, while Saudi Arabia's Jeddah-Riyadh domestic service entered the top five at 9.9 million seats.

Future growth trajectory

A whitepaper released by Alton Aviation Consultancy ahead of the 2026 Singapore Airshow confirms Asia's trajectory will continue, forecasting that India, China, and Southeast Asia will account for eight of the world's ten fastest-growing air travel markets between 2024 and 2044.

International traffic in Asia-Pacific grew 8.0% in 2025, outpacing global Revenue Passenger Kilometer growth of 6.8%. Carriers have launched over 600 new routes since 2015, significantly enhancing intra-regional connectivity.

Mabel Kwan, Managing Director at Alton's Singapore office, noted: "Asia's air travel story is no longer just about China. The growth we're seeing in South and Southeast Asia is broad-based. Airlines are responding with strategic moves, from entering new markets and renewing fleets to forging ambitious partnerships."

Cargo and infrastructure

Asia-Pacific's aviation dominance extends to freight, with the region now accounting for approximately 40% of global air cargo demand, reflecting intra-Asia trade growth and the region's critical role in global supply chains.

Governments and airport operators across Asia are advancing large-scale infrastructure programmes and next-generation technologies to accommodate surging demand, positioning the region to maintain its aviation leadership for decades to come.
