US suspends immigrant visas for Bangladesh, 74 countries
In a statement issued this morning, the embassy clarified that the decision originates from the US Department of State and applies to nations whose immigrants are statistically more likely to receive public assistance at comparatively higher rates, thereby creating financial burden upon American taxpayers.
The United States has suspended the issuance of immigrant visas for citizens of Bangladesh and several other countries, effective January 21, 2026, the US Embassy in Dhaka announced on Monday.
In a statement issued this morning, the embassy clarified that the decision originates from the US Department of State and applies to nations whose immigrants are statistically more likely to receive public assistance at comparatively higher rates, thereby creating financial burden upon American taxpayers.
The suspension exclusively affects immigrant visas and does not impact visitor visas (B1/B2), business travel, or other non-immigrant categories, the embassy emphasised.
Crucially, citizens from affected countries retain the ability to submit applications for immigrant visas and may still attend previously scheduled interviews. The State Department will continue processing applications and scheduling interviews despite the suspension of final visa issuance.
The announcement, effective from late January, raises questions about processing timelines for Bangladeshi applicants awaiting immigrant visa approvals. Further clarifications regarding the specific countries affected and duration of the suspension are expected from US authorities in due course.
