Bangladesh Resumes Visa Services in India
Bangladesh High Commission officials in New Delhi confirmed that visa processing restarted on a limited scale from 20 February, covering all categories
Bangladesh has officially resumed visa operations at all of its diplomatic missions across India, signalling a renewed effort to stabilise relations between the two neighbouring countries after months of diplomatic strain.
Officials in New Delhi confirmed that visa processing restarted on a limited scale from 20 February, covering all categories. Services are expected to be expanded gradually in the coming days.
The decision comes shortly after the BNP-led government under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman assumed office on 17 February, following national elections earlier this month. Bilateral ties had cooled following political developments in Dhaka in August 2024, when former prime minister Sheikh Hasina left the country amid mass protests.
In the aftermath, visa issuance slowed significantly and certain travel categories were tightened, affecting passenger movement between the two countries. Diplomatic engagement has picked up in recent weeks.
India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar visited Dhaka late last year, while Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his congratulations to the new administration after it took office. Travel between the two countries remains substantial.
According to Indian immigration data, more than two million Bangladeshis visited India in 2023, primarily for medical treatment, tourism and business. That number declined in 2024 amid political tensions and visa restrictions.
Officials in Dhaka described the resumption of visa services as a positive step towards restoring normal travel and strengthening bilateral cooperation. Further announcements regarding the full restoration of tourist visas are expected in the coming days.
