Five Bangladeshi expatriates from Sylhet were killed in a road accident in Qatar on Sunday morning, according to family members and local officials.

The accident occurred in the Sanaya area of Qatar while the victims were travelling to their workplace in a pick-up van. The vehicle reportedly lost control, killing all five men on the spot.

Kanai Ghat Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mehedi Hasan Shakil confirmed the deaths.

"We have received information that five people have been killed. We are currently collecting details about the victims," he said.

However, local representatives later identified the deceased as Mostak Ahmed, 30, son of Salim Ullah of Majhtaluk village; Jubayer Ahmed, 30, son of late Ahsan Ullah of the same village; Jasim Uddin, 30, son of Siraj Uddin of Agataluk village; Jibal Ahmed, 36, son of Abdun Noor of Amarpur village; and Kadir Ahmed, 24, son of Bahar Uddin of Gachhbari Nayagram under Dakshin Banigram union.

All the victims were from Kanai Ghat upazila in Sylhet district.

Family members said the five expatriates were on their way to work when the accident occurred. Their bodies have been kept at a local hospital morgue in Qatar.

Meanwhile, State Minister for Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Md Nurul Haque expressed deep shock and sorrow over the tragic incident.

In a condolence message, he said the sudden deaths of these "remittance warriors", who contribute significantly to the country's economy, were deeply painful.

The state minister directed the labour wing of the Bangladesh Embassy in Qatar to take immediate steps to repatriate the bodies and ensure that the affected families receive appropriate financial compensation.

He also assured that the government would stand by the bereaved families during this difficult time.

Ahmed Malek, General Secretary of the Jalalabad Association Qatar, said constant communication is being maintained with the Bangladesh Embassy in Qatar.

“Arrangements are being made to send the bodies of the five deceased expatriates back to the country as soon as possible after completing necessary legal procedures,” he said.

The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the community in Kanaighat, where the families of the deceased are awaiting the return of their loved ones. Concerned authorities are working to expedite the repatriation process.
