Syeda Iqbal Mand Banu, founder chairperson of Surovi School, Dhaka, received the prestigious 'SM Sultan Medal 2026' on the legendary Bangladeshi artist's 103rd birth anniversary on Friday (June 19). She was honoured in recognition of her exceptional contributions to the education, art and culture of underprivileged children.

Syeda Iqbal Mand Banu is the spouse of former minister and navy chief Rear Admiral Mahbub Ali Khan. She is also the mother of noted cardiologist Dr Zubaida Rahman and mother-in-law of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

The day was celebrated with due dignity and cultural activities at the Osman Jamal Auditorium of the Faculty of Fine Art, University of Dhaka, on June 19. The event, titled Sultan Children's Festival 2026, was organised by the leading cultural organisation Canvas.

Ekushey Padak-winning renowned artist Professor Dr Md Abdus Sattar attended the occasion as the chief guest. Special guests were Dr Md Azharul Islam Sheikh, dean of the Faculty of Fine Art, and Md Israfil Ratan, associate professor and proctor of the University of Dhaka.

The programme was presided over by artist Shahidul Islam Shahid and curated by artist Md Mahmudul Hasan. The convener of this event was artist Abdur Razzaque Prodhan Liton.

The festival featured a children's art competition held on the premises of the Faculty of Fine Art, followed by a discussion session and prize distribution ceremony at the auditorium. Children from various schools and cultural organisations participated enthusiastically, showcasing their artistic talents inspired by the legacy of SM Sultan.

In his speech, chief guest Professor Dr Md Abdus Sattar highlighted Sultan’s unique contribution to Bangladeshi art and called upon the younger generation to draw inspiration from his life and work. The special guests also spoke about the importance of nurturing creativity among children and recognising those who work tirelessly for marginalised communities.

The organisers expressed their gratitude to all participants, guests and well-wishers for making the event a success. They also announced that the medal would be awarded annually to individuals making significant contributions in the fields of children's education and culture.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks, leaving the audience inspired by the enduring legacy of SM Sultan and the ongoing efforts to promote art among the younger generation.
