Egypt’s World Cup campaign has hit an off-pitch hurdle, as local security authorities have denied the team’s request for a direct flight from Vancouver to Seattle ahead of their final Group G fixture against Iran on Friday, reports Reuters.

The Egyptian squad, buoyed by their historic 3-1 victory over New Zealand on Sunday at BC Place, had planned to fly directly to Seattle to prepare for the decisive match. However, security officials refused the request, forcing the team to return to their training base in Spokane, Washington, approximately 280 miles east of Seattle.

Egyptian team manager Hossam confirmed the development in a statement released by the Egyptian Football Association. "The security authorities refused the team’s request to stay in the city of Seattle as planned after the New Zealand match in the World Cup, and therefore, the team’s delegation will return to the city of Spokane," he said.

The refusal means Egypt will travel from Spokane to Seattle on match day, rather than enjoying the convenience of a direct Vancouver–Seattle connection and several days of acclimatisation in the host city. The team had submitted a formal request to remain in Seattle this week, but authorities deemed it unfeasible.

On the pitch, however, Egypt has reasons to celebrate. In Sunday's Group G opener, Mohamed Salah inspired a remarkable comeback as the Pharaohs overturned a first-half deficit to defeat New Zealand 3-1, their first-ever World Cup victory. Salah scored one goal and set up another, while Mostafa Ziko and substitute Trezeguet also found the net.

The result has put Egypt in a strong position to qualify for the Round of 32, with the Iran match now carrying enormous significance. Despite the travel disruption, the Egyptian camp remains focused on the task ahead.

With qualification on the line, the Pharaohs will hope that logistical setbacks do not overshadow their historic pursuit of World Cup glory.
