The third terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport is expected to significantly expand Bangladesh’s aviation capacity and strengthen the country’s position as a regional aviation hub once fully operational, Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) Chairman Air Vice Marshal Mostafa Mahmud Siddiq said on Thursday.

Talking to the members of the Bangladesh Aviation and Tourism Journalists Association (BATJA) at the CAAB headquarters, he said the airport’s annual passenger handling capacity would rise from the current 13 million to around 19 million after the launch of the new terminal.
“With the launch of the terminal, we will be able to serve more airlines, which will directly contribute to increasing revenue in the country’s aviation sector,” he said.

The CAAB chairman said several modern technologies are being introduced at the third terminal to reduce passenger inconvenience and improve service quality to international standards.

According to him, the terminal will include advanced immigration systems and automated customs facilities to ensure faster and smoother passenger processing.

He also said a multi-level car parking facility with capacity for around 1,200 vehicles is being constructed, which is expected to ease the long-standing traffic congestion around the airport area.

Addressing concerns over mobile network connectivity inside the terminal, he assured that adequate signal repeaters would be installed to ensure uninterrupted network coverage for passengers.

Air Vice Marshal Mostafa Mahmud Siddiq further said preparations are underway to open the terminal as quickly as possible under the direct instructions of the Prime Minister.

He added that efforts are also continuing to reopen eight long-closed domestic airports, including those in Bogura, Ishwardi, Thakurgaon and Lalmonirhat, to strengthen domestic air connectivity across the country.

Industry stakeholders believe the third terminal will play a major role in expanding Bangladesh’s aviation sector, boosting tourism, attracting more international airlines and supporting broader economic growth.
