US warns against misuse of public benefits
The warning applies to all categories of non-immigrant visas, including tourist, business, student, journalist and transit visas
The US Embassy in Dhaka has warned that foreign nationals who misuse taxpayer-funded public assistance programmes or become dependent on such benefits while in the United States risk having their visas revoked and could face difficulties obtaining US visas in the future.
The advisory was issued on Saturday through the embassy's verified Facebook page as part of a renewed effort to remind prospective travellers of their responsibilities under US immigration laws.
According to the embassy, non-immigrant visa holders are expected to be financially self-sufficient during their stay in the United States and should not rely on public assistance funded by American taxpayers.
The warning applies to all categories of non-immigrant visas, including tourist, business, student, journalist and transit visas.
The embassy said individuals found to have improperly used public benefits or become dependent on government assistance could face visa cancellation and may also be deemed ineligible for future US visas.
It urged travellers to ensure they have adequate financial resources to meet their living expenses throughout their stay without seeking public assistance.
The advisory comes as US authorities continue to tighten enforcement of immigration regulations and encourage full compliance with visa conditions by foreign visitors.
