Today is holy Ashura. Ashura, which marks the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), is being observed across Bangladesh and elsewhere in the Islamic world with due religious fervour, devotion and solemnity.

Observed on the 10th day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, Ashura commemorates the tragic events of 61 AH, when Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the beloved grandson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH), along with members of his family and 72 loyal companions, embraced martyrdom on the plains of Karbala while standing against tyranny and upholding the principles of truth and justice.

The occasion is a public holiday in Bangladesh. Religious organisations have arranged various programmes, including discussions, prayers and mourning processions, to honour the sacrifices made at Karbala and reflect on the enduring message of faith, justice and sacrifice.

To ensure public safety during the observance, law enforcement agencies have deployed enhanced security measures across the capital and other parts of the country.

State-owned Bangladesh Betar and Bangladesh Television, along with several private television channels, are broadcasting special programmes highlighting the religious and historical significance of Ashura.
