Two Japanese airports likely to operate HSIA T3
Haneda and Narita operators might be given the mandate to manage the facility under a 15-year deal
Bangladesh is likely to hand over operations of the newly built third terminal at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport to a Japanese consortium under a proposed 15-year agreement, marking a major step in the country’s aviation modernisation drive.
The consortium includes globally recognised operators such as Japan Airport Terminal Co Ltd and Narita International Airport Corporation. These companies manage Tokyo’s Haneda and Narita airports respectively-both widely regarded for their efficiency, cleanliness and high standards of passenger service, reports Checkinbd.
The third terminal, built at a cost of around Tk22,000 crore, spans approximately 542,000 square metres.
Once fully operational, it is expected to handle an additional 1.2 to 1.6 crore passengers annually, significantly expanding the airport’s current capacity.
The facility will also be capable of handling around 900,000 tonnes of cargo each year, boosting Bangladesh’s trade and logistics capabilities.
Aviation stakeholders say the involvement of experienced Japanese operators could address longstanding issues in airport management, including passenger congestion, baggage handling inefficiencies and service quality gaps.
Industry insiders also point to Japan’s renowned hospitality culture-often described as omotenashi—as a potential game changer in elevating customer experience standards at the terminal.
Officials believe the partnership could help position Dhaka as a more competitive regional aviation hub, aligning its infrastructure and services with international benchmarks.
