Largest funeral in history in pictures
The world witnessed the largest funeral in human history as an estimated 45 million people globally joined the last rites of slain Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khameini
The world just witnessed the largest funeral in the history of mankind, with an estimated 43 to 45 million of people from across the globe attending the last rites of slain Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed
In addition to the high profile representatives from over 100 countries across the world, including presidents, prime ministers, parliament speakers and many more foreign dignitaries from different strata of society, millions of people of Iran and Iraq took to the streets to join the weeklong funeral procession that started from Tehran and continued spiraling through holy Shiite cities of Najaf and Karbala in Iraq and Qom in Iran, before reaching the Iranian city of Mashhad where Khameini and his family members were finally buried.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei died alongside his daughter, his son-in-law, a grandchild, and top Revolutionary Guard commanders in a joint US-Israeli airstrike on his Tehran compound on February 28 last. The targeted attack also injured his successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, according to a report from the Guardian.
Outpouring of grief and call for revenge were the language of the mass. Millions of mourners chanted slogans like 'death to America' or 'Hey Trump, we will kill you', demonstrating the current mentality of the Iranian society irrespective of class, creed and religion.
A degatiom from Bangladesh led by National Parliament Speaker Major (Retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed also attended the historic funeral and it included representatives from two main opsition parties of the countries at present.
At least 41 to 43 million people participated in the six-day funeral ceremony for Iran’s slain Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, according to various global news outlets including Qatar-based Al Jazeera, Turkey-based Anadolu Agency, Iran-based Tehran Times and Russian news agency RT.
Iran’s Press TV called Khamenei’s funeral “the largest procession the world has ever witnessed”. Ceremonies took place across five cities: Tehran, Qom, Najaf, Karbala, and Mashhad.
The official public funeral proceedings began last Saturday when tens of thousands of Iranians gathered at the Grand Mosalla religious complex in Tehran where Khamenei’s coffin was on display.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’s (IRGC) top commander has pledged vengeance against the US and Israel for the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, saying it won’t “be erased from the historical memory”, Al Jazeera reports.
Brigadier-General Ahmad Vahidi called for the “full realisation of justice and a fitting response to the criminals, especially the child-killing American army”.
“The criminal leaders of America and all enemies of the Islamic Revolution and the Resistance Front must know that by the cowardly assassination of this divine leader they will never… bring the flag of resistance to the ground,” Vahidi said in a statement carried by Sepah news agency.
“Avenging the martyrs and the punishment of the perpetrators… will remain a definitive, legitimate, and an unforgettable demand.”
Here is an album of photos containing different unforgettable moments during different phases of the weeklong funeral of leader of the oppressed Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khameini.
