At least 50 migrants are feared dead or missing after a boat carrying around 60 people, including women and children, capsized off Libya's eastern coast while attempting to reach Europe, authorities said.
The vessel overturned on Tuesday near Bardaa Island, off the coastal city of Tobruk, according to eastern Libya's Coast Guard.
Authorities said 10 survivors managed to swim to the island and were rescued, while search operations for the remaining passengers are continuing.
The latest incident is one of several deadly shipwrecks involving migrants attempting the perilous Mediterranean crossing from North Africa to Europe. Last month, another boat sank off eastern Libya, leaving 51 migrants dead or missing.
Libya has become one of the main departure points for migrants fleeing conflict, persecution and poverty in Africa and the Middle East since the country descended into instability following the 2011 NATO-backed uprising that overthrew longtime leader Moammar Gadhafi.
People smugglers frequently pack migrants into overcrowded and unseaworthy boats for the journey across the Mediterranean, making the route one of the world's deadliest migration corridors.
According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), more than 800 migrants were reported dead or missing along the central Mediterranean route between January 1 and May 16 this year.
The IOM said more than 1,300 migrants died or went missing on the same route during 2025.
