Bangladesh eyes Airbus fleet expansion

Bangladesh has stepped up efforts to deepen aviation cooperation with Europe, with the government expressing its interest in acquiring Airbus aircraft as part of Biman Bangladesh Airlines' long-term fleet expansion strategy.

The issue was discussed during a courtesy meeting between Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam and State Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat with senior European diplomats at the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism in Dhaka on Wednesday.

The meeting was attended by French Ambassador Jean-Marc Séré-Charlet, British High Commissioner Sarah Cooke, Spanish Ambassador Gabriel Sistiaga, German Chargé d'Affaires Anja Tersten and European Union Deputy Head of Delegation Baiba Zerin.

According to the ministry, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the longstanding partnership between Bangladesh, the European Union and its member states while exploring new avenues of cooperation in the civil aviation sector.

A key focus of the discussions was Biman Bangladesh Airlines' fleet modernisation programme, particularly the possible acquisition of Airbus aircraft.

The minister and state minister said the government is interested in introducing Airbus aircraft to develop a sustainable mixed fleet while safeguarding Bangladesh's national interests.

The European representatives welcomed the discussions and reaffirmed their willingness to extend the necessary cooperation regarding the proposed aircraft acquisition.

The meeting also reviewed broader opportunities for collaboration in civil aviation, reflecting both sides' interest in expanding bilateral engagement as Bangladesh continues to modernise its aviation sector and strengthen connectivity with Europe.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism said the discussions formed part of ongoing efforts to enhance strategic partnerships with European countries in support of the country's long-term aviation development goals.
