'One Child, One Tree’ prog launched in Manikganj

Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam on Sunday inaugurated the 'One Child, One Tree' programme in Manikganj, aimed at promoting environmental awareness among children and helping build a greener and more liveable Bangladesh.

The programme was launched at Nabagram Government Primary School in Manikganj Sadar, where the minister attended as the chief guest, said a press release from the ministry.

Addressing the event, Afroza said the initiative was not merely about planting trees but about fostering a long-term commitment to environmental protection.

"We have not gathered here merely to inaugurate a programme. We have gathered to pledge our commitment to building a greener Bangladesh for future generations—to place a tree in the hands of a child and sow the seeds of a better tomorrow," she said.

The minister said the government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, is working to build a modern, green and liveable Bangladesh.

"Development is not limited to the construction of bridges, roads or buildings. It becomes meaningful only when nature is protected, the environment remains safe and people are conscious of their responsibilities," she said.

She added that planting a tree was more than planting a sapling; it was a pledge, a responsibility and a gift to future generations.

Afroza also thanked the people of Manikganj for their trust and sought their continued support and prayers to help fulfil the aspirations of the district's residents.

She formally inaugurated the programme by planting a tree alongside government officials and other participants.

The programme was organised by the Manikganj Sadar Upazila Administration and was attended by district and upazila officials, along with local dignitaries.
