Customs seize 19kg gold from Biman flight
As many as 160 gold bars worth around Tk 420 million recovered from the aircraft’s cargo hold
Customs officials have seized nearly 19 kilograms of gold from a Biman Bangladesh Airlines aircraft at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka today (Thursday).
The gold was recovered from Biman flight BG-148, which arrived in Dhaka from Dubai via Chattogram, in the morning, according to the Dhaka Customs House.
The aircraft landed around 10:30am, after which a joint team of customs and law enforcement officials searched its cargo hold.
During the operation, officials recovered 160 gold bars, wrapped in adhesive tape and abandoned inside the cargo compartment.
Kamrul Hasan, Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Customs House, said the recovered gold bars weighed 18.7 kilograms and have an estimated market value of Tk42 crore.
He said the gold was found in an abandoned condition and no claimant had come forward.
Legal proceedings are now underway, and a case is being prepared with the Airport Police Station, he added.
The authorities concerned are investigating the incident to identify those involved in the attempted smuggling operation.
