Rathjatra boosts religious tourism: Minister

Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam on Thursday said religious and cultural festivals such as Rathjatra play an important role in promoting Bangladesh's tourism sector while strengthening communal harmony and preserving the country's rich heritage.

She made the remarks while inaugurating the Rathjatra festival of Lord Jagannath at the Sri Sri Anandamoyee Kalibari Temple premises in Manikganj as the chief guest, says a press release.

The minister said the government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, is working to build a discrimination-free, secular, peaceful and prosperous Bangladesh, where people of all faiths can celebrate their religious festivals freely.

She said Bangladesh has immense potential to develop religious and cultural tourism by showcasing its diverse traditions, historic temples, festivals and heritage sites to both domestic and international visitors.

"Religious festivals like Rathjatra not only reflect our cultural diversity but also contribute to promoting tourism, local businesses and community engagement," she said.

Highlighting the government's efforts to modernise the tourism sector, Afroza Khanam said various initiatives have been taken to make civil aviation and tourism services more efficient, accessible and user-friendly. She added that measures are also being implemented to ensure hassle-free and quality air services for Bangladeshi expatriates.

Greeting the Hindu community on the occasion of Rathjatra, the minister thanked local residents for their trust and support.

"It is because of your love, confidence and support that I am in this position today. I seek the cooperation of people from all communities to build a safer and more developed Manikganj. Please pray for me so that I can fulfil the aspirations of the people," she said.

The event was attended by senior leaders of the Manikganj district BNP, local dignitaries and a large number of Hindu devotees.
