Monsoon travel safety tips

Thousands of people expected to travel to Bangladesh’s hills, beaches and wetlands during the monsoon; travellers are being urged to take precautions to avoid accidents and health risks caused by heavy rain and rough weather.

Travel experts advise checking weather forecasts for heavy rainfall, flash floods and landslides before going out, as adverse conditions can quickly turn tourist destinations into danger zones.

Travellers should carry raincoats or umbrellas, along with a spare set of quick-drying clothes. Essential medicines, including paracetamol, should also be packed. Those planning overnight stays are advised to ensure mosquito nets are available at their accommodation or carry mosquito repellent to reduce the risk of mosquito-borne diseases.

Take extra care in the hills

Visitors heading to hill districts should wear boots, shoes with good grip that are suitable for wet and rough terrain. Authorities recommend hiring an experienced local guide when exploring remote hill areas and following their instructions.

Waterfalls become particularly dangerous during the monsoon, as surrounding rocks and slopes become extremely slippery. Tourists are advised not to climb steep slopes near waterfalls, while even seemingly calm pools beneath waterfalls may conceal strong currents or deep water. Those who cannot swim should avoid entering the water altogether.

Leeches are common on forest trails during the rainy season. Travellers are advised to tuck their trousers into their socks where possible. If bitten by a leech, it should be removed gently using a sharp object rather than pulled off by force.

Beach safety

Before going the sea, visitors should check tide conditions and the latest weather updates. Swimming is prohibited in areas marked with red warning flags. Non-swimmers should always wear life jackets and follow the instructions of lifeguards.

Tourists visiting Bangladesh’s haor wetlands are advised to check local administrative advisories before travelling. Passengers should also ensure that houseboats carry sufficient life jackets before beginning their journey.
