Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) President Dr Tanaka Akihiko has reaffirmed the agency's commitment to supporting the expansion of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA), describing the flagship project as a key driver of Bangladesh's aviation development, regional connectivity and sustainable economic growth.

During a visit to the airport expansion project on 1 July, Dr Tanaka reviewed the progress of construction and received updates on the implementation of one of Bangladesh's largest infrastructure projects.

He reiterated JICA's continued commitment to helping develop world-class aviation infrastructure that will enhance the country's airport capacity, improve regional and international connectivity, and support long-term economic development.

The HSIA expansion project is expected to significantly increase passenger handling capacity, improve operational efficiency and strengthen Bangladesh's position as a regional aviation hub.

JICA said the project reflects the enduring partnership between Bangladesh and Japan, highlighting decades of cooperation in infrastructure development and economic advancement.

The agency described the airport expansion as another milestone in bilateral relations, underscoring the shared commitment of both countries to promoting sustainable development through modern, resilient infrastructure.

The Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport expansion project is one of JICA's flagship investments in Bangladesh and forms part of its broader support for improving the country's transport and logistics network.
