Stable fuel prices a relief for tourism
This stability in July fuel rates is expected to support domestic travel and transport costs
The government's decision to keep retail fuel prices unchanged for July is expected to provide a measure of stability for Bangladesh's tourism and transport sectors as the country enters one of its busiest domestic travel periods.
According to a notification issued on Tuesday by the Energy and Mineral Resources Division, the existing fuel prices introduced in June will remain effective from July 1. Under the current pricing structure, diesel will continue to retail at Tk115 per litre, octane at Tk145, petrol at Tk140 and kerosene at Tk135 per litre.
The decision follows last month's increase of Tk5 per litre in the prices of octane, petrol and kerosene, while diesel prices were left unchanged.
Tourism operators said maintaining fuel prices would help transport companies avoid immediate fare increases, offering greater certainty for travellers planning trips during the summer holiday season.
Intercity buses, tourist coaches, private vehicles and rental transport services are all sensitive to fluctuations in fuel costs. Stable prices are therefore expected to ease pressure on travel expenses to popular destinations such as Cox's Bazar, Sylhet, Bandarban, Rangamati and Kuakata.
Industry insiders noted that while transport operators are still absorbing June's fuel price adjustments, the absence of a further increase in July should help keep operating costs under control and support domestic tourism demand.
Hotel operators and tour organisers also welcomed the decision, saying predictable transport costs encourage more families and groups to travel, particularly during weekends and public holidays.
The Energy and Mineral Resources Division said the competent authority had approved the decision to maintain the June pricing structure throughout July.
Under the current rates, octane remains the country's most expensive fuel, priced Tk5 higher than petrol and Tk30 above diesel per litre.
Although tourism stakeholders welcomed the price stability, they said sustained growth in domestic tourism would also depend on affordable transport, improved connectivity and broader economic conditions affecting consumers' disposable incomes.
