Biman Bangladesh Airlines etched their name in history on Saturday, clinching the maiden Airlines Football Championship (AFC) 2026 title after a tense penalty shoot-out victory over the US-Bangla Airlines.
The grand finale, hosted at the Gulshan Youth Club Field, ended 1-1 after full time before Biman converted both their spot-kicks to secure the win.
SM Jahangir Kabir Joy emerged as the hero for Biman, scoring the crucial equaliser in a match marred by a 10-minute stoppage due to clashes between players and supporters.
Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam Rita graced the closing ceremony as the chief guest. She presented the most-coveted trophy to the champions.
Aviation & Tourism Times Editor M Aminul Islam and Biman Bangladesh Airlines General Manager Boshra Islam were also present at the event.
Earlier in the third-place playoff, Air India edged past Qatar Airways with a narrow 1-0 victory. US-Bangla had reached the final after a 4-3 win over Air India, while Biman stormed into the title clash with a commanding 4-0 demolition of Qatar Airways in the semi-finals.
The tournament, inaugurated on Friday by State Minister for Youth and Sports Md Aminul Haque, featured 16 domestic and international airlines under the theme “One Sky, One Field, One Champion.” The event marked a milestone as Bangladesh’s first premier airlines football championship, with the ambassadors of Brazil and Argentina also in attendance at the opening ceremony.
