Customs Seizes Tk3.80cr in Foreign Currency at Dhaka Airport

Customs intelligence officials have seized foreign currency worth more than Tk 3.80 crore from two outbound passengers at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
The operation was carried out on Friday by the Directorate General of Customs Intelligence and Investigation following confidential information. Officials recovered Saudi riyals (SAR), euros (EUR), pound sterling (GBP) and Thai baht (THB) concealed in the luggage of passengers travelling to Bangkok on flight BS-217.
Customs officers found SAR 405,500, EUR 24,000, GBP 30,050 and THB 7,849 hidden in the luggage of passenger Rafiqul Islam. The total value of the recovered currency amounts to approximately Tk 2,20,56,040.
From another passenger, Al Amin Molla, officials seized SAR 485,000 and THB 2,110. The currency recovered from his luggage was valued at around Tk 1,59,87,747.
The combined value of the foreign currency seized from both passengers stands at Tk 3,80,43,787. In both cases, the money had been concealed using sophisticated methods.
The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate has begun the process of filing criminal cases against the two passengers. Authorities have not released further details about the suspects or any potential smuggling network.
Bangladesh enforces strict regulations on carrying foreign currency to curb money laundering and other illegal financial transactions. Passengers are required to declare amounts exceeding the prescribed limits when leaving the country.
