Bilkis Ahmed Becomes Youngest Female Boeing 777 Captain
Bilkis had earlier made history as the first female pilot in Bangladesh’s private aviation industry and her latest appointment further strengthens her contribution to women’s empowerment and the advancement of aviation in the country.
Captain Fariel Bilkis Ahmed has taken up her duties as the youngest female captain of a Boeing 777-300ER at Biman Bangladesh Airlines, marking another milestone for the country’s aviation sector.
Fariel had earlier made history as the first female pilot in Bangladesh’s private aviation industry. Her latest appointment further strengthens her contribution to women’s empowerment and the advancement of aviation in the country.
The Boeing 777-300ER is one of Biman’s flagship wide-body aircraft, used on long-haul international routes. The position of captain demands extensive training, significant flight hours and a high level of technical expertise to operate the aircraft’s complex systems.
Fariel’s family played a crucial role in her aviation journey. Her elder brother, Captain Noman, served as her mentor and inspiration. It was his encouragement that first sparked her dream of sitting in an aircraft cockpit and pursuing a flying career.
Her achievement comes at a time when Bangladesh is expanding its aviation capacity and encouraging more women to enter traditionally male-dominated professions. Her promotion to the rank of captain reflects the growing opportunities for female pilots within the national carrier.
Biman Bangladesh Airlines operates its Boeing 777-300ER aircraft on major international routes, including Dhaka to London and Toronto, as well as other long-haul destinations. The aircraft requires highly skilled crew members to manage its advanced navigation and flight management systems.
Captain Fariel’s appointment is expected to inspire more young women to consider careers in aviation. Her journey — from becoming the first female pilot in the private aviation sector to the youngest captain of a Boeing 777 — highlights dedication and professional excellence in a demanding field.
Aviation industry professionals have welcomed her achievement as a significant step forward for gender equality in Bangladesh’s commercial aviation sector.
