The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) has foiled an attempt to smuggle gold into Bangladesh by arresting an Indian passenger at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram.
Acting on a tip-off, a CIID team from its Chattogram Regional Office intercepted the passenger after he crossed the airport's Green Channel following his arrival from Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates.
The passenger, identified as Thameem Ansari, arrived on Air Arabia flight at 6:58am on Saturday.
During a body search, CIID officials recovered capsule-shaped gold concealed inside the passenger's underwear using a specially designed method.
The recovered items, including the packing materials, weighed 455 grams. Authorities said the process of removing the packaging and determining the exact weight and purity of the gold is under way with the assistance of a certified goldsmith.
The estimated market value of the seized gold is approximately Tk1 crore.
CIID officials said legal proceedings have been initiated under the Customs Act, while preparations are also under way to file a criminal case against the passenger.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening intelligence surveillance and enforcement operations to prevent the smuggling of gold and other contraband through Bangladesh's international airports.
