The US-Israel war on Iran has ended through the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between US and Iran on June 17 last, but Israel's continued relentless bombardment on South Lebanon, including Beirut, has put the already fragile ceasefire on the brink of collapse. A complete ceasefire still seems elusive, with the loss of civilian lives mounting in the region with every passing day.

At a time when the conflict has settled into a grinding, unpredictable deadlock — far removed from the 'very fast' campaign United States President Donald Trump once promised at the time of beginning the aggression on February 28 last — signing of the US-Iran MoU brought forth the light of hope among the victims of the brutally deadly war.

Despite the signing of the MoU, which was expected to implement a cessation of hostilities at all fronts including Lebanon, Israel has continued bombardment and drone attacks in Lebanon, putting the fragile ceasefire in the face of complete collapse. In response, Iran again closed down the Strait of Hormuz due to the breach of MoU by Israel. As a result, the Strait of Hormuz remains largely closed to maritime traffic and attacks persist across southern Lebanon.

Earlier, a Pakistan-brokered ceasefire announced on April 8 had done little to stop the bloodshed.

Israel has expanded the war on Iran to Lebanon, killing at least 3,593 people in the country, displacing more than one million and expanding its occupation in the south, razing entire villages. Lebanon’s death toll is higher than the official figure of killings in Iran, where it started on February 28, with at least 3,468 dead.

More than 150 people were killed in other countries in the region, in addition to 26 in Israel and 13 US soldiers, in Iranian attacks.

This photo gallery documents several months of war across Iran, Lebanon, and the broader region — from devastated neighbourhoods and crowded funerals to missile-struck airports, gridlocked escape routes, and staged rallies — bearing witness to the human cost of a conflict with no end in sight.
