Bangladesh Bridge Authority has launched Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) registration at both ends of the Padma Bridge, aiming to ensure faster, smoother and more efficient toll management.

Field-level registration activities began on April 3 at a bus depot in Faridpur using portable RFID scanners. In addition, a dedicated booth at the Mawa end of the bridge is operating throughout the week to facilitate vehicle owners.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges on Tuesday, the registration drive will be expanded in phases to Madaripur and several locations in Dhaka, including Rajarbagh, Sayedabad and Jatrabari. So far, 546 vehicles have been registered under the system.

Authorities are also distributing leaflets to raise awareness and encourage vehicle owners to enrol in the ETC system.

The ETC system allows vehicles to pass through toll plazas without stopping, maintaining speeds of over 60 kilometres per hour. Payments can be made digitally through platforms such as bKash, Nagad, Upay, Tap and various banking apps.

Officials say the system will reduce congestion at toll points, save time and fuel, enable cashless transactions and provide instant SMS notifications after each payment.

Md Abdur Rouf, secretary of the Bridges Division and executive director of the BBA, said the initiative has been undertaken in line with government efforts to modernise the country’s transport system.

He added that the system would allow vehicles to cross the Padma Bridge more quickly, contributing to improved connectivity and overall economic activity.
