Visa operations between Bangladesh and India will be normalised soon, India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Pranay Kumar Verma, said on Monday.

He made the remarks while speaking to reporters after a meeting with Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir at his Secretariat office in the capital.

The High Commissioner emphasised the deep trade ties between the two neighbouring countries, saying India would work jointly with Bangladesh’s new government to further expand bilateral trade.

“Visa operations will also be restored to normal at the earliest,” he said.

Commerce Minister Muktadir said the Indian High Commissioner had visited to congratulate the new government.

He added that several border haats and land ports are currently closed but would be reopened in the near future to strengthen trade relations between the two countries.

However, the minister confirmed that there was no discussion during the meeting regarding the future of India-funded projects in Bangladesh.

Earlier, on Sunday (March 1), during a meeting at the Secretariat with Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, High Commissioner Verma reiterated that India would gradually resume full visa services for Bangladeshi citizens.

Speaking to the media after that meeting, the Home Minister said that over the past one and a half years, Indian consulates and visa offices had faced several attacks at different times. Due to security concerns, they had not been able to operate at full capacity. However, he said India had assured Bangladesh that visa services would be restored in phases.
