State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam on Wednesday reaffirmed the government’s “zero tolerance” policy against illegal migration, warning that strict legal action would be taken against human trafficking networks involved in irregular migration.

She made the remarks while chairing a meeting on migration and mobility at State Guest House Padma, organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs following the recent deaths of several Bangladeshi migrants in the Mediterranean Sea along the Bangladesh-Libya-Italy route.

Shama Obaed Islam said the government led by Tarique Rahman remains committed to preventing illegal migration and dismantling trafficking networks that exploit vulnerable migrants.

The meeting was attended by the Foreign Secretary, senior government officials, the ambassadors of Italy and Libya to Bangladesh, and the Chief of Mission of the International Organization for Migration in Dhaka.

During the meeting, Italian Ambassador Antonio Alessandro said the European Union is expected to introduce new asylum and migration rules in June, which could make it harder for undocumented migrants to gain legal status in Europe.

Participants stressed the need to expand safe, orderly and regular migration channels through skill development, language training, and stronger coordination between workforce training programmes and overseas employment opportunities.
