Filipino airport closed after strong tremor
A 7.8 magnitude earthquake off Mindanao forces the suspension of General Santos Airport operations, cancels 17 flights
The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has temporarily suspended all operations at General Santos Airport following a massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of Sarangani province in Mindanao on Monday morning.
The powerful quake, which occurred at 7:37am local time at a depth of 10 kilometers, prompted the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) to issue a tsunami warning across several regions. Tsunami alerts were also briefly raised in Indonesia and Japan, though most have since been lifted.
CAAP announced that a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) is in effect from 8:45am to 3:00pm on Monday. "Assessments of air navigation facilities, equipment, and operational capabilities are currently underway to ensure the continued safety and integrity of airport operations," CAAP said in an advisory.
At least 17 flights to and from General Santos Airport have been cancelled as of 10am, including 11 operated by Cebu Pacific, four by PAL Express, and two by Philippine Airlines. Passengers have been advised to coordinate with their respective airlines for updates.
Visuals from the airport showed abandoned luggage, as travelers rushed to evacuate during the tremors. Police reported at least three fatalities and five injuries so far. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr has directed all relevant government agencies to act immediately, urging people in coastal areas to move to higher ground.
Further advisories from CAAP are expected as damage assessments continue.
