Nimni to leave for Everest expedition today
Bangladeshi climber aims to summit Everest and raise national flag after months of preparation
Bangladeshi mountaineer Nurunnahar Nimni is set to leave Dhaka today for Nepal to begin a 50-day expedition aimed at summiting Mount Everest and raising the Bangladesh flag at the top of the world.
Ahead of her departure, a flag handover ceremony and press briefing were held on Friday at Zahur Hossain Chowdhury Hall of the National Press Club in Dhaka.
After receiving the national flag, Nimni said she would attempt Everest via the southern route from Nepal. She noted that months of preparation and her previous successful summit experience had given her the confidence to take on the world’s highest peak.
“To prepare for this expedition, I have been training for several months. I start my day at 5:00am and continue physical training even after completing my office hours,” she said.
When asked about her future plans, Nimni said her immediate goal is to complete the mission safely. “For now, I just want to return safely,” she added.
The event was attended by Ghanshyam Bhandari and women’s rights activist Shirin Parveen Haque as guests of honour. Managing Director and CEO of Pubali Bank PLC, Mohammad Ali, joined as a special guest representing the expedition sponsor. The press conference was conducted by Everest climber M A Muhith.
Nimni has previously completed basic mountaineering training in India and has climbed peaks in the 6,000 and 7,000 metre ranges. Her successful ascent of Himlung Himal in Nepal last year marked a turning point in her preparation for Everest.
She said she has been preparing for this mission since 2022, including training in Darjeeling and taking part in multiple expeditions. Upon arrival in Nepal, she will collect essential climbing gear and spend time acclimatising at base camp before moving to higher camps and eventually making her summit push, subject to weather conditions and team clearance.
The expedition is being organised by the Bangladesh Mountaineering and Trekking Club and sponsored by Pubali Bank PLC.
Officials and organisers expressed hope that Nimni’s journey will inspire more women in Bangladesh to take part in mountaineering and represent the country on the global stage.
