Philippine Airlines is set to join the Oneworld Alliance, making it the 16th member of the global airline alliance, reports ABS-CBN, a media outlet in the Philippines.

PAL Holdings president Lucio Tan III called this development a defining and transformative moment for the Philippine flag carrier. He said they will deliver greater choice, consistent journeys, and a world-class travel experience to Filipinos and global travellers.

“Becoming a member of the Oneworld Alliance and strengthening Southeast Asia’s representation within the group significantly brings the Philippines and the region closer to the world like never before,” Tan said.

PAL said the airline received an invitation to join the alliance today at the International Air Transport Association Annual General Meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

“PAL’s entry into Oneworld supports our long-term strategic growth and strengthens our connectivity across key markets in the Asia Pacific region,” said Robert Isom, Chairman of the Oneworld Governing Board and Chief Executive Officer of American Airlines.

As a member of the global alliance, PAL said this will unlock a smoother experience for passengers, which includes access to premium lounges globally. Mabuhay Miles members can also earn or redeem miles across Oneworld member airlines.

Oneworld, one of the biggest airline alliances, includes the following members: Alaska Airlines/Hawaiian Airlines, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Fiji Airways, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Oman Air, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Royal Air Maroc, Royal Jordanian, and SriLankan Airlines.
