Monsoon rain may disrupt travel plans
Rain and thunderstorms are likely in many parts of Rangpur, Mymensingh, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions on Wednesday, while scattered showers are also expected in parts of Dhaka, Rajshahi, Khulna and Barishal divisions
Travellers and tourism operators across Bangladesh are being advised to prepare for wet weather as the southwest monsoon continues to spread across the country, bringing increased rainfall to several popular destinations.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), rain and thunderstorms are likely in many parts of Rangpur, Mymensingh, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions on Wednesday, while scattered showers are also expected in parts of Dhaka, Rajshahi, Khulna and Barishal divisions.
The forecast suggests that temporary gusty winds, lightning and light to moderate rainfall may affect travel activities, particularly in hill, coastal and nature-based tourism destinations. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also possible in some areas, which could throw a spanner in the works for road journeys and outdoor recreational activities.
Tourism stakeholders say the arrival of the monsoon season often presents both challenges and opportunities for the sector. While heavy rain can affect transport schedules and outdoor sightseeing, the season also enhances the natural beauty of destinations such as Sylhet's tea gardens, the Chattogram Hill Tracts, and various waterfalls and eco-tourism sites across the country.
The weather office said the monsoon reached Bangladesh about a week later than usual this year. It has already expanded across Chattogram, Mymensingh, Sylhet, Khulna and Barishal divisions and is expected to cover the rest of the country in the coming days.
As monsoon activity intensifies nationwide, tourism operators are encouraging visitors to keep an eye on weather updates and plan their journeys accordingly. Hotels and resorts in several destinations are also preparing for an increase in monsoon-season travellers seeking nature-focused experiences.
Meteorologists forecast a slight decrease in daytime temperatures in the southern parts of the country, while temperatures elsewhere are expected to remain largely unchanged. Night-time temperatures may rise slightly across Bangladesh.
