Kevin Kelly, Ambassador of Ireland to Bangladesh (resident in New Delhi), paid a courtesy call on Shama Obaid Islam, Hon’ble State Minister for Foreign Affairs, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs this morning.

According to the ministry website, During the meeting, Ambassador Kelly warmly congratulated the state minister on her recent assumption of office and expressed his confidence that bilateral relations between Ireland and Bangladesh would be further strengthened under the present government.

Both sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to advancing the mutually beneficial partnership between the two countries. Discussions focused on exploring new avenues for cooperation across a range of sectors, including trade and commerce, development partnerships, education, sports, culture, as well as consular and migration matters. The two sides also emphasized the importance of strengthening collaboration in both bilateral and multilateral forums.

The state minister formally requested Ireland's support for Bangladesh's candidacy for the presidency of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (2026–2027). The two diplomats also exchanged views on various regional and global issues, underscoring the importance of peace, stability, and enhanced international cooperation in addressing shared challenges.

The meeting reflects the ongoing efforts of both nations to deepen their diplomatic engagement and expand cooperation beyond traditional areas. Bangladesh and Ireland have maintained cordial relations since the establishment of diplomatic ties, with both countries seeking to build on existing partnerships in development, education, and people-to-people contacts.

The courtesy call also provided an opportunity to discuss ways to facilitate greater exchanges between the two nations, including educational collaboration and cultural diplomacy. The state minister expressed appreciation for Ireland's continued engagement with Bangladesh and looked forward to further strengthening the relationship in the coming years.

Senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were also present during the meeting.
