Cox’s Bazar tourist zones to get free internet
Efforts are also underway to introduce satellite-based internet connectivity for fishing trawlers in the Bay of Bengal to improve safety and communication
The government is working to introduce free internet services in major tourist areas of Cox’s Bazar, including the popular Marine Drive, Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam said on Saturday.
He made the announcement while addressing an “Internet for All” meeting organised by the district administration at the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Cox’s Bazar.
The minister said the initiative is being implemented under the direction of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to expand internet access across the country. He added that efforts are also underway to introduce satellite-based internet connectivity for fishing trawlers in the Bay of Bengal to improve safety and communication.
He noted that four airports in Bangladesh have already been brought under free Wi-Fi coverage, while free internet is also available on four intercity trains, including the Tourist Express and Cox’s Bazar Express.
The meeting was chaired by Cox’s Bazar Deputy Commissioner Md A Mannan and attended by Prime Minister’s Adviser Rehan Asif Asad, Posts and Telecommunications Ministry Secretary Abdun Naser Khan, and Cox’s Bazar Superintendent of Police ANM Sazedur Rahman, among others.
Discussions focused on expanding safe and accessible internet services, improving cybersecurity awareness, and strengthening digital connectivity at the grassroots level.
Later, the minister inaugurated free Wi-Fi services for passengers at Cox’s Bazar railway station and visited the submarine cable landing station as part of his official programme.
