Indian visa processing under various categories, including tourist visas, will be expedited and restored to full normalcy soon, said Aniruddha Das, Assistant High Commissioner at the Indian Assistant High Commission in Sylhet.

Speaking at a views-exchange meeting with journalists at the Sylhet District Press Club on Wednesday afternoon, Aniruddha Das said that the necessary steps had already been taken in this regard.

“At present, medical visas and double-entry visas are being issued. We are working to swiftly normalise visa services across other categories as well,” he said.

The envoy emphasised that relations between Bangladesh and India are built on mutual respect and understanding. “The two countries share long-standing connections in thought, culture and heritage. We want to work together. The strength of India-Bangladesh relations lies in its people,” he added.

He further noted that the citizens of both nations would remain key stakeholders in fostering a stable, positive, constructive and long-term partnership. Stressing geographical and cultural proximity, growing economic capacity and shared future aspirations, he underscored the importance of transforming these advantages into new opportunities through mutual cooperation.

Highlighting the role of the media, the Assistant High Commissioner said objective reporting and constructive criticism could help reinforce bilateral ties. He also assured maximum cooperation in visa issuance to further strengthen relations between the two countries.

During the meeting, journalists raised issues related to trade and commerce between Sylhet and India’s northeastern states, as well as the prospects and challenges in expanding connectivity and educational and cultural exchanges. They also urged the Government of India to undertake more socio-economic development projects in the Sylhet region under its “Aid to Bangladesh” and Line of Credit (LoC) initiatives.

Paying tribute to the martyrs of Bangladesh’s Liberation War, speakers stressed the need to further consolidate the historic bond between the two neighbours.

The event was presided over by the press club’s President Moin Uddin and moderated by General Secretary Mohammad Nasir Uddin. Among others, Rajesh Bhatia, Second Secretary (Press, Information, Education and Culture) at the Indian mission, and representatives from various media outlets also spoke at the programme.
