Bangladeshi killed in Ukrainian drone attack in Russia
He is believed to have died around a week ago
A Bangladeshi expatriate from Moulvibazar was reportedly killed in a Ukrainian drone strike while working with Russian forces in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, according to family members and local officials, reports the Daliy Star.
The deceased, Muhibur Rahman, 26, was the son of Masud Mia from Sampadpur village under Amtoil union in Moulvibazar Sadar upazila.
Family members said Muhibur had travelled to Russia several years ago with the hope of pursuing higher education. According to his younger brother, Habibur Rahman, Muhibur studied there for around two and a half years before returning to Bangladesh briefly last year, when he got married. He later went back to Russia.
Habibur said Muhibur informed the family that he was working as a cook for the Russian army, preparing food in different military bunkers during the war.
The family learned about his death from Muhibur’s colleague in Russia, Mehedi Hasan, who reportedly supplied food to Russian soldiers. According to Habibur, Muhibur was killed about a week ago after a bunker he was staying in was destroyed in a Ukrainian drone attack.
“He may have been killed around a week ago, but his body has not yet been repatriated,” Habibur said, adding that the family’s only demand now is to bring his body back home.
Habibur also alleged that brokers had persuaded his brother to participate in the war by promising a high salary and Russian citizenship after the conflict. “Without informing the family, my brother may have been influenced by those promises,” he said.
Local union parishad representatives confirmed receiving reports of Muhibur’s death from the family. Md Iqbal Ahmed, a member of Amtoil union parishad, said the family informed them that Muhibur died in a Ukrainian drone strike in Russia.
Acting chairman of Amtoil union parishad, Md Mosahid Hossain, also confirmed hearing about the incident from local representatives and family members.
Meanwhile, Md Saiful Islam, officer-in-charge of Moulvibazar Sadar Police Station, said police had been informed about the matter by local union officials.
Neighbours described Muhibur as the sole breadwinner of the family. The grieving family has declined to speak further following the incident.
