Bangladesh seeks expanded legal migration to Italy
Italy is one of the top destinations for Bangladeshi migrant workers and many Bangladeshis working there have earned a strong reputation while contributing significantly to the economies of both countries
Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon on Tuesday urged the Italian government to recruit more Bangladeshi workers through legal channels, highlighting the vital role Bangladeshi migrants play in Italy’s economy.
He made the call during a courtesy meeting with Italian Ambassador Antonio Alessandro at the ministry office in Dhaka.
During the meeting, Swapon described Italy as one of the top destinations for Bangladeshi migrant workers and said many Bangladeshis working there have earned a strong reputation while contributing significantly to the economies of both countries.
The Italian ambassador referred to the longstanding friendly ties between Bangladesh and Italy and raised concerns over illegal and risky sea migration from Bangladesh and other countries to Italy.
Both sides stressed the importance of expanding overseas employment opportunities through safe and legal migration channels.
In this context, Alessandro said around 20,000 Bangladeshis migrated legally to Italy over the past year, adding that the regular migration process between the two countries has been progressing smoothly.
Swapon also underscored the need to further diversify bilateral relations and proposed joint cooperation with Italian institutions to modernise Bangladesh’s mass communication, digital platforms and broadcasting sectors.
The minister expressed interest in knowledge-sharing initiatives by drawing on Italy’s technological expertise and advanced experience in media and communication.
Prime Minister’s Information and Broadcasting Adviser Dr Zahed Ur Rahman and senior ministry officials were present at the meeting.
