Bangladesh Introduces Visa-on-Arrival for North Koreans
North Korean passport holders can now obtain visas at designated entry points in Bangladesh, instead of the earlier requirement to secure visas in advance through Bangladeshi embassies or consulates
Bangladesh has introduced the visa-on-arrival facility for citizens of North Korea, namely Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), marking a notable shift in its entry policy toward one of the world’s most diplomatically isolated countries.
According to international media reports, North Korean passport holders can now obtain visas at designated entry points in Bangladesh, instead of the earlier requirement to secure visas in advance through Bangladeshi embassies or consulates. The move does not grant visa-free access but simplifies the entry process.
Previously, travelers from North Korea had to complete the standard pre-approval procedures before visiting Bangladesh. The new arrangement allows eligible visitors to complete immigration formalities upon arrival.
The North Korean passport ranks among the weakest globally, with citizens facing strict visa restrictions due to limited diplomatic ties and international sanctions. Only a small number of countries offer visa-free, visa-on-arrival, or electronic travel authorisations to North Koreans.
Bangladesh and North Korea have maintained diplomatic relations for decades, although ties have fluctuated. North Korea closed its embassy in Dhaka in late 2023, but communication channels have remained open.
Analysts say the policy reflects Bangladesh’s effort to maintain a balanced foreign policy while engaging with a wide range of countries. While the practical impact may be limited, the move is seen as symbolically significant in the context of global travel restrictions.
