More than 500 flights operating between Dhaka and several Middle Eastern destinations have been cancelled since late February due to ongoing security concerns in the region and the closure of multiple airspaces, officials said.

According to airport authorities, a total of 500 flights were cancelled between 28 February and 15 March from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, reports BSS.

Officials said airlines were forced to suspend operations as the airspaces of several countries, including Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar and Jordan, remained closed amid the ongoing regional security situation.

Data from the airport shows that flight cancellations were recorded almost every day during the period, with 23 flights cancelled on 28 February, followed by 40 on 1 March, 46 on 2 March, 39 on 3 March, and several others throughout the following days. On 15 March (after 0000 local time) alone, 23 more flights were cancelled.

These included services operated by airlines such as Kuwait Airways, Air Arabia, Gulf Air, Qatar Airways, Emirates, Jazeera Airways, flydubai, Biman Bangladesh Airlines and US-Bangla Airlines.

Airport authorities said flight operations would resume once the situation in the Middle East improves and airspace restrictions are lifted.

Passengers have been advised to stay in contact with their respective airlines for updates regarding flight schedules and travel arrangements.
