Migrant worker Dipali's body back home from Beirut
Her tragic fate highlights the extreme vulnerability of Bangladeshi migrant workers in conflict zones and raises urgent questions about the adequacy of protections for them when host countries descend into war
The mortal remains of Dipali Akter, a Bangladeshi worker who lost her life in an airstrike in Lebanon, have been returned to her homeland.
Her body arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka late Thursday night, aboard a flight from Lebanese capital of Beirut, says a press release sent to media on Friday.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid Islam formally received the remains at the airport on behalf of the government, added the expatriates’ welfare ministry release.
Dipali Akter was killed on Wednesday (April 8, 2026) when a devastating Israeli airstrike struck the Hamra neighbourhood of Beirut, where she had been residing with her employer's family. The attack claimed the lives of her employer and several other members of the household as well.
The repatriation ceremony at the airport was attended by senior government officials, including Acting Secretary of the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Ahmaddul Haque, Director General (Consular & Welfare) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dewan Ali Ashraf, and Director General of the Wage Earners' Welfare Board Md Asaduzzaman.
Dipali’s death comes amid an intensifying military campaign in Lebanon, with a rising death toll among civilians across Beirut and beyond. Her tragic fate highlights the extreme vulnerability of Bangladeshi migrant workers in conflict zones and raises urgent questions about the adequacy of protections for them when host countries descend into war.
