Govt targets raising tourism contribution to 6–7% of GDP
Govt is committed to implementing its development agenda and sees tourism as a key driver of economic growth and deputy commissioners would play a leading role in advancing development initiatives at the district level
The government has set a target to increase the contribution of the tourism sector to 6–7 per cent of Bangladesh’s gross domestic product (GDP), up from the current level of around 3 per cent, as part of a broader strategy to expand the country’s travel and hospitality industry.
The announcement was made by Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam at the opening session of the Deputy Commissioners’ (DC) Conference 2026, held at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium on Monday.
Speaking at the event, the minister said the government is committed to implementing its development agenda and sees tourism as a key driver of economic growth. She expressed hope that deputy commissioners would play a leading role in advancing development initiatives at the district level.
According to the minister, Bangladesh currently has 1,742 identified tourist sites across the country, highlighting the sector’s untapped potential. She said a comprehensive master plan is being prepared to guide the development of tourism infrastructure and services nationwide.
The minister also called for the development of heritage sites such as Baliati Zamindar Bari and Teota Zamindar Bari in Manikganj to attract more visitors and preserve cultural assets.
State Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat said local administrators can act as catalysts for change by promoting new tourist destinations, ensuring clean and safe environments, and encouraging innovative initiatives. He noted that even small improvements at the district level could significantly boost local economies.
Officials said the government aims to position Bangladesh more prominently on the global tourism map by strengthening infrastructure, improving the visitor experience, and promoting both natural and cultural destinations.
