The government has instructed Deputy Commissioners (DCs) across the country to ensure stronger safety and security measures at tourist destinations, as part of efforts to revitalise Bangladesh’s tourism sector.

Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam announced the directive on Monday after the second day’s session of the DC conference at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital.

The session, held jointly with the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and the Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministry, focused primarily on strengthening the country’s tourism industry and improving the visitor experience.

The minister said detailed discussions were held on upgrading tourist facilities across districts and identifying ways to attract more domestic and international visitors. Destinations such as Monpura and Netrokona were highlighted as areas with strong potential for tourism development.

“We have instructed DCs to ensure that visitors do not face any security concerns while travelling,” she said, adding that proposals from field-level administration will receive full support from the ministry for implementation.

Special emphasis was also placed on improving cleanliness and overall management at Cox’s Bazar, particularly its beach areas, to enhance the experience for tourists.

Responding to a question on Saint Martin’s Island, the minister said the issue of seasonal restrictions was not discussed during the session but remains under consideration.

Describing the current state of the tourism sector as underdeveloped, she said the government aims to transform tourism into a major industry with support from both the public and private sectors. She added that the initiative aligns with the vision of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to expand the sector’s contribution to the economy.

On aviation-linked tourism development, the minister said discussions also covered districts with airport facilities. Plans are under way to further develop Saidpur Airport, while initiatives have been taken to explore airport development in Thakurgaon and Bogura.

She also noted that the government is considering establishing a flying academy in Bogura to train future pilots, aiming to meet growing demand in the aviation sector and create opportunities for talented students.

Officials said the directives issued at the DC conference reflect a broader push to improve infrastructure, safety and investment in tourism, positioning the sector as a key driver of economic growth.
