Biman Bangladesh Airlines has signed a major agreement with Boeing to purchase 14 new aircraft, marking one of the largest fleet expansion efforts in the airline’s history.

The deal was formalised at a ceremony in Dhaka on Thursday, covering a mix of wide-body and narrow-body jets-eight Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners, two 787-9 Dreamliners, and four 737-8 MAX aircraft.

Biman’s Managing Director and CEO Kaizer Sohel Ahmed signed on behalf of the airline, while Boeing Vice President Paul Righi represented the manufacturer.

Senior government officials and diplomats attended the event, highlighting the strategic importance of the agreement.

Officials said the acquisition is aimed at modernising the airline’s ageing fleet, improving fuel efficiency, and expanding both passenger and cargo capacity.

The Dreamliners are expected to strengthen long-haul routes to Europe, the Middle East and Asia, while the 737 MAX aircraft will support regional connectivity.

The agreement comes as Bangladesh prepares to launch the third terminal at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, a development seen as critical to handling future passenger growth and positioning the country as a regional aviation hub.

The deal also ends more than three years of competition between Boeing and European rival Airbus for Biman’s next major fleet order, reinforcing Boeing’s long-standing partnership with the national carrier.
