NOVOAIR seeks to expand operations on international routes
NOVOAIR would need to obtain approval from the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) and secure bilateral traffic rights for specific routes
Private carrier NOVOAIR has expressed its intention to launch international flight operations, marking a significant expansion from its current domestic network, reports online news portal Check In.
The airline, which currently operates daily flights from Dhaka to Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Sylhet, and Saidpur, is reportedly evaluating potential international destinations and preparing the necessary regulatory applications.
Strategic expansion
According to aviation industry insiders, NOVOAIR has been conducting feasibility studies on several regional routes, with potential destinations including Kolkata (India), Bangkok (Thailand), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), and Singapore. These destinations are popular among Bangladeshi travellers and currently served by multiple international carriers.
The move would position NOVOAIR as a competitor to existing international operators, including Biman Bangladesh Airlines, US-Bangla Airlines, and various foreign carriers on regional routes.
Regulatory requirements
To operate international flights, NOVOAIR would need to obtain approval from the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) and secure bilateral traffic rights for specific routes. The airline would also require additional aircraft to support expanded operations, potentially adding to its current fleet of Boeing 737 and ATR aircraft.
Industry context
Several domestic airlines have previously attempted international operations with varying degrees of success. US-Bangla Airlines currently operates to multiple international destinations, while other carriers have scaled back or suspended international services due to operational challenges and intense competition.
Market potential
Aviation analysts note that the Bangladesh outbound travel market continues to grow, with millions of Bangladeshi nationals travelling abroad annually for employment, education, tourism, and medical treatment. However, the market remains highly competitive, with full-service carriers and low-cost airlines from the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and South Asia competing for passengers.
Official confirmation
NOVOAIR has not yet made an official announcement regarding specific international routes or timelines. The airline's management is expected to provide further details once regulatory approvals and operational arrangements are finalized.
