Local ETD training completed at Dhaka airport
To modernise and strengthen the airport’s security system, CAAB has installed 25 new explosive trace detectors
The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) has completed local training on the operation of explosive trace detectors (ETDs) for Aviation Security (AvSec) personnel at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
As part of efforts to modernise and strengthen the airport’s security system, CAAB has installed 25 new NUCTECH TR2000DC explosive trace detectors.
A total of 44 selected AvSec officers and employees took part in the training, conducted by experts from the original equipment manufacturer (OEM).
The training covered the proper operation of the equipment, sample collection, detection procedures, interpretation of results and operational safety.
The NUCTECH TR2000DC uses ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) technology with a non-radioactive ionisation source. It is designed to detect trace amounts of explosives and illicit drugs and can assist security personnel in identifying suspicious substances on passenger baggage, cargo and other surfaces.
CAAB said the introduction of the technology would enhance the airport’s capacity to detect explosives and drugs, improve the effectiveness of security screening and help identify potential security risks more quickly.
The new equipment will complement existing security measures as part of the airport’s multi-layered security system, it said.
CAAB also stressed the importance of properly trained personnel to ensure the effective use of modern security equipment. Further training and practical exercises are being emphasised to ensure personnel can operate the ETDs effectively while following prescribed security procedures and standards.
The introduction of the new ETD technology and the development of AvSec personnel’s skills are also expected to strengthen the airport’s security preparedness ahead of an International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) audit scheduled for November 2026, according to CAAB.
Similar training programmes will subsequently be arranged for relevant personnel at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram, Osmani International Airport in Sylhet and Cox’s Bazar International Airport.
CAAB said it would continue such initiatives to modernise security systems at the country’s airports, strengthen technological capabilities and develop skilled personnel in line with international standards.
