CPA dredges canal to ease flooding at airport runway
The port authorities cited the measures form part of broader efforts to improve the city’s drainage capacity

The Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) has begun re-excavating canal no 12 under its own funding and supervision to help eliminate waterlogging on the runway and surrounding areas of the Shah Amanat International Airport.
The initiative is being carried out as part of the port authority’s support to the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) in addressing the port city’s recurring drainage problems, CPA Secretary Syed Refayet Hamim said.
He said the canal excavation is progressing under close supervision of the port authority’s officials to ensure the work is completed as quickly as possible.
In addition to the canal restoration, the CPA has intensified dredging operations at the mouths of several major canals, including Rajakhali, Chaktai, Fishery and Mohesh Khal, using grab and cutter suction dredgers.
According to the port authority, the ongoing dredging is helping rainwater accumulated across different parts of Chattogram drain more rapidly into the Karnaphuli River, thereby reducing waterlogging in the city.
The authority said the measures form part of broader efforts to improve the city’s drainage capacity and minimise disruption caused by heavy monsoon rainfall, particularly at key transport infrastructure such as Shah Amanat International Airport.
