Young tourist dies bathing in Matamuhuri River
After several hours of hectic effort, his body was recovered from the river at about 7:00pm
A young tourist drowned while bathing in a river in Lama upazila of Bandarban on Thursday, officials said.
The deceased was identified as Abdul Wadud Sayem, 21, son of Md Saifullah of the Bakkhali area in Sitakunda, Chattogram.
According to police and local sources, a group of six tourists from Sitakunda arrived in the Minjiri area under Fasiakhali union earlier in the day and checked into a resort.
Shortly afterwards, they went to the nearby Matamuhuri River to bathe. At one point, Sayem entered a deeper stretch of the river and went missing.
On information, members of the Lama Fire Service launched a search operation at around 1:30pm. After several hours of hectic efforts, his body was recovered from the river at about 7:00pm.
The resort authorities said tourists had been warned to steer clear of the deeper parts of the river. Warning flags had been put up and verbal cautions were also issued, but the group reportedly turned a blind eye to the instructions.
Lama Fire Service Station Officer Md Abdullah said the body was later sent to a hospital.
Officer-in-Charge of Lama Police Station Shahjahan Kamal confirmed the incident and said the victim’s family had been informed. The body will be handed over after completion of legal formalities, including an autopsy.
