Sri Lanka gets its first passenger drone

A two-passenger eVTOL with a flight time of roughly 30 minutes, slated for its maiden flight at Colombo Port City.

Sri Lanka has received its first passenger transport drone, with its maiden flight expected to take place at Colombo Port City by the end of October, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAASL).

The aircraft is an electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) vehicle capable of carrying two passengers, with an estimated flight time of around 30 minutes.

Colombo Port City has been identified as the initial operating zone. Potential applications include scenic flights over Sigiriya and Pidurangala, popular tourist destinations in central Sri Lanka, as well as transfers between Bandaranaike International Airport and hotels in Colombo.

The initiative may also explore opportunities in tourism and maritime logistics, subject to the necessary regulatory and safety approvals.
