Bangladesh has launched a pilot QR-based ‘Fuel Pass’ app exclusively for motorcycle users as part of efforts to modernise fuel distribution and improve transparency, officials said.

The system, introduced by the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) under the Energy and Mineral Resources Division, is currently being tested at two filling stations in Dhaka - Trust Filling Station in Tejgaon and Sonar Bangla Filling Station in Asadgate.

At the initial stage, only motorcycle owners and riders are included in the pilot programme. Authorities said the initiative will later be expanded to other vehicle categories across the country if the trial proves successful.

Officials said the app is designed to replace manual fuel distribution with a fully digital system supported by real-time monitoring. It will also be integrated with the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) database to ensure accurate tracking and better coordination.

Under the system, motorcycle users will receive fuel by scanning QR codes at designated petrol pumps. Riders will also be able to check their allocated fuel quota through the app.

A central monitoring dashboard will track fuel distribution in real time, while users without smartphones will still be able to register through a website and print their QR codes for use.

Authorities said the system aims to reduce long queues, prevent repeated fuel collection, and eliminate irregularities that can lead to artificial shortages at filling stations.

The Energy and Mineral Resources Division said the pilot project is expected to improve efficiency in fuel supply management and strengthen governance in the energy sector.

Officials added that the system will be expanded nationwide after evaluation of the pilot phase.
