Domestic airfares rise following jet fuel price hike
Airfares from Dhaka rise by Tk 1,000–1,200 on domestic routes
Airfares on domestic routes have increased significantly following a sharp rise in jet fuel prices, with passengers now paying an additional Tk 1,000 to Tk 1,200 per ticket for flights from Dhaka to various destinations, reports Check In, a digital news portal.
On Tuesday, the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) raised jet fuel prices for domestic routes from Tk 112.41 per litre to Tk 202.29 per litre—an increase of nearly Tk 90 per litre. In response to this substantial hike, domestic airlines have adjusted their fares by introducing new fuel surcharges.
According to the updated fare list, ticket prices on routes from Dhaka to Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Sylhet, and Saidpur have increased by Tk 1,200 per ticket. Consequently, passengers traveling on return tickets on these routes will now incur approximately Tk 2,400 more than before. Additionally, fares on the Dhaka-Jashore and Dhaka-Rajshahi routes have also increased, with an additional Tk 1,000 per ticket added to each journey.
Airline officials stated that while the base fare remains unchanged, the additional amount has been incorporated into the total ticket price as a "fuel surcharge." They explained that the decision was necessitated by rising operational costs following the sharp increase in jet fuel prices.
Industry insiders have expressed concern that if fuel prices remain elevated for an extended period, it could negatively impact domestic tourism and air passenger traffic. Both the aviation sector and the tourism industry could face significant pressure as a result.
