Air Algérie orders 10 Boeing 737 MAX 8 jets
The new order expands upon a fleet renewal programme that is already in progress
Algeria's national carrier, Air Algérie, has placed an order for 10 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft as part of a comprehensive strategy to develop the country's civil aviation sector, the airline announced Thursday.
According to a company statement cited by state news agency APS, five of the aircraft are expected to be delivered in the second half of this year, with the remaining five scheduled for delivery in 2027. The airline stated that the acquisition aims to modernise its fleet, expand its route network, and enhance passenger service quality.
Broader fleet renewal programme
The latest order builds on an existing fleet renewal initiative already underway. Air Algérie has previously ordered 10 Airbus A330-900neo wide-body aircraft, three of which have already been delivered. Additionally, the airline has secured eight Boeing 737 MAX 9 jets, expected to arrive from 2027.
To improve regional connectivity within Algeria, Air Algérie has also ordered 16 ATR 72 turboprop aircraft for its domestic subsidiary.
Longstanding Boeing relationship
The order reflects a long-standing relationship between Air Algérie and Boeing that dates back to the 1960s and 1970s, when the airline first began acquiring Boeing aircraft for its domestic and European routes. This enduring partnership has facilitated favourable negotiations, technical support, and network compatibility with the airline's established destinations.
African aviation context
The expansion comes at a time when African airlines are increasing capacity to meet rising travel demand, fuelled by population growth, urbanization, and recovering tourism flows. However, the sector continues to face persistent challenges, including high operating costs, limited infrastructure, and currency pressures in several markets.
Air Algérie stated that the move would help the carrier keep pace with global aviation trends and strengthen its competitiveness on regional and international routes, marking a strategic step in its ongoing fleet modernization and operational efficiency plan.
